Over the past few months I’ve had the esteemed pleasure of working with one of New York City’s top luxury real estate photographers, Rich Caplan. Not to be thwarted by a shoulder injury requiring surgery, Rich brought me on as his right-hand woman during his recovery process. In just two months, together we shot over 200 interior and exterior properties throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn {plus one stunner of a horse farm in Bedford, NY}. Although my experience and passion lies in photographing the stories of people, what I learned about the world of luxury real estate and how to effectively tell each property’s story is invaluable. More than that though, I felt and saw NYC in a way I never had before. There were days where I’d find myself on a street I’d never even heard of, much less traveled down, having a great cup of coffee while a slow breeze brushed past the laughter of school children at recess. Then there were days where it felt like 95 degrees outside and I’d traveled from Harlem to Williamsburg to the UES to the West Village to Tribeca to the UWS. All by subway and walking. While carrying 25 pounds of equipment. With no lunch break…. All I wanted to do was hail a cab to LGA and board a plane back to the peaceful, humid-free, quiet Colorado Rockies. But those good days did outweigh the tougher ones {and those tougher ones helped me get back in much-needed physical shape}. I met so many interesting people – artists, athletes, writers, a concert pianist, entrepreneurs, actors, the extremely wealthy and the averagely wealthy hard working New Yorkers. While pounding the pavement each day, I crossed paths with the people of New York who don’t go to an office every day – dog walkers, nannies, stay-at-home moms, students, other photographers, real estate brokers {Rich knew every single one we passed}, celebrities that I didn’t recognize, even a Spirtual Shaman from upstate that we helped navigate through the West Village. I saw some of the most incredible apartments, lofts, roof tops and townhomes that I would never otherwise have had the pleasure of seeing. I finally realized how critical it is to not just get on the correct subway line, but the correct car of the subway if you want to get anywhere on time and I now know where to get a good burger in every neighborhood of the city {anyone who knew me when I used to live in Manhattan knows that I was a consistently late vegetarian – you should be so proud of me now}!
Most days were long and most nights and weekends were spent keeping Nicole D Photography going strong. Now that Rich is almost 100% recovered, my time with him is winding down and I’m looking forward to spending my days solely focused on Nicole D Photography and my nights sleeping {or enjoying a craft beer with my husband}! I have so many sessions to blog about and so many exciting shoots, weddings and projects coming up so please stay tuned!
