As a photographer serving Westchester area, one of the most frequent questions I get asked is when to book a maternity photoshoot in Scarsdale. There isn’t really a hard and fast answer to this, and there are a few things to consider. Let’s go through some of them here!
Before we talk about timing for your maternity session, you should research and hire a photographer. Most photographers book sessions 3-4 months in advance so if you wait too long, you might find that your favorite photographer is unavailable. Instagram is a great resource to find photos from local photographers. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few photographers that you love, read their reviews on Google and be sure to check out their websites.
Reach out to your favorite photographers during your second trimester to get more information. Many maternity photographers offer packages and discounts on maternity sessions when booked with a newborn session so this is a great time to plan that too!
When it comes time to scheduling your maternity session, I always recommend planning for when you’re 32-36 weeks pregnant. This tends to be the sweet spot when your bump is showing but you’re not completely uncomfortable yet. Every pregnancy is different and I often photograph moms before or after that time range, but it’s a good point to aim for.
When scheduling your session date, you’ll also want to talk about location and other details. Depending on the season and your vision, you may want to have your photos captured outdoors at sunset or in the comfort of your home. Talk to your photographer if you’d like to include your partner, older children or pets.
After your date and location is finalized, you might want to book hair & makeup with a local stylist and of course start planning your outfit! This is another great thing to talk to your photographer about since they have so much experience in this department. I love helping my clients choose what to wear and even have guides to help them!
Like pregnancies, every photographer is different 🙂 During my maternity photo sessions, I take a very lifestyle approach. I love to have some traditional portraits of mom (and family) mixed with candid, natural moments. I talk to moms before the session so they know what to expect, but I don’t do a lot of posing. Rather, I give guidance and direction so you can feel comfortable and look your best.
My favorite place for maternity sessions is inside client’s homes as that’s where you are your most natural self. It’s cozy, intimate and you don’t have to worry about venturing out in your third trimester. However, I photograph plenty of outdoor maternity sessions in parks that I love in the Westchester, NY area.
Amidst the anticipation and excitement of awaiting your baby’s arrival, there are even more things to consider when scheduling a maternity photoshoot. As a mom of two and maternity photographer for 10 years, I know this! Documenting your pregnancy in a way that feels natural shouldn’t just be something to simply check off your list. You deserve to have this time captured authentically. These images will stand the test of time and be passed down through generations, but they’re also for you.
If this resonates with you, reach out so we can talk more! Together we can tell your growing family’s story in a natural way. Whether you prefer to have your session in your home or in an outdoor location, I will guide you through the process, before, during and after. With a laid-back approach, I offer maternity photo sessions in Scarsdale and throughout Westchester, NY.
