When I first started my business in 2013, I came across this quote by John Durniak, a former editor of the New York Times: “Fear… it keeps thousands of pictures from passing through the lens.” Since then I’m constantly reminded of his words both literally in my everyday work and figuratively with business and personal decisions. In particular, it has reverberated over and over again in relation with The National Park Charity Print Project that I’m so excited to finally share with you!
Over a year ago, a photographer I follow and admire, Lauren Fair, came up with a brilliant idea. She created a print shop of her worldly travels in which the proceeds from her prints would be donated to charity. I was instantly inspired and knew I wanted to do the same exact thing, but with a little twist…
While I have visited a few countries outside of the US, my travels have primarily brought me to the National Parks and other wilderness areas of our beautiful country. These spaces are my oasis. They are as much of an adventure as they are a calm retreat. They bring me joy, awe-inspiring moments, and quite often they bring me to tears.
People like Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir and Ansel Adams (to name only a few) laid the groundwork to designate, promote and protect our National Parks. And today, there are so many groups and individuals continuing to conserve and fight for these lands that it would be hard to list them all here. Inspired by them and by the parks themselves, I’ve always wanted to find a way to be more involved.
So, after over a year of letting the fear that these photos aren’t good enough, or the fear of knowing that I’m not a travel or landscape photographer, or the general fear of failure stop me in my tracks over and over again, I’ve finally pushed that fear aside and set-up The Charity Print Project print shop! The shop includes a select few favorites from some of the Parks that we visited in 2014 (plus a few images from other areas of the country). Over time, I plan on adding more from Parks we’ve already experienced and of course the rest that we plan on checking off our bucket list (so far we’re at 15/59)!
The net proceeds from every print will be donated to the National Park Foundation. My hope is that this project inspires you, encourages you to #FindYourPark and that together it helps us support the National Parks Foundation’s mission to conserve and protect these sacred lands. Check back often and follow #CharityPrintProject as new prints are added!
