So, your wedding is coming up, and everything is going according to plan. You have finalized everything with your vendors, your dress fits perfectly, and your rehearsal went off without a hitch. And then, you see it. There’s rain in the forecast, and it’s just not going away. Before you panic, I want you to take a breath and readjust. As a Westchester County wedding photographer, this is something we deal with a lot, and while I know it’s stressful, there are ways you can work around it. If you are looking for some tips to get through your rainy day wedding photos, here are some ideas!

If you are set on outdoor pictures, you can definitely make rainy day wedding photos work, but I always advise first looking for indoor locations. It helps to do this well before your wedding date and have a backup plan established months ahead of time. That way, you can know all the permits and requirements at your interior of choice. If you need some ideas, you can try locations like public buildings, libraries, coffee shops, or greenhouses. Even awnings and porticos can work!

Usually, rainy days still let up here and there during a wedding day. Chat with your vendors and planner to see if there is any way to move around your schedule. Maybe you can shift your cocktail hour up a little or start your reception an hour later than you had planned. Ask someone in your wedding party to keep an eye on the weather so you can take full advantage of those dry moments!

Most wedding professionals have backup plans on how to handle rainy days. If you see rain on the horizon, reach out to your photographer. Ask if you can go over some ideas together so you can feel prepared, no matter what the weather entails. For those who have an outdoor wedding planned, see if the venue has a backup shelter. If not, you can rent a clear event tent that celebrates the views while keeping you dry!

Now that you have some backup plans, it’s time to figure out how to have a little fun with them! You can make some stylistic choices that will keep you dry while also looking great on camera! Buy some umbrellas for you, your partner, and your wedding party. You can grab them and head outside for some pretty great pics. You can also opt for some rainboots for your wedding shoes and be sure to show them off!

When you see those rain clouds make their appearance, it’s natural to be stressed. But I promise, you can still have your perfect day even with rainy day wedding photos! Years from now, this is going to be a story you tell your friends and family, and you’ll have some pretty iconic pics for proof. Talk to your photographer about playing around with the rain with backlighting or depth of field. And if you are comfortable, get outside and use this as an adventure! You can get some pretty legendary pictures if you are willing to get a little wet.
