Your newborn session is the most important one you’ll book. Before you know it, your new baby is going to be a toddler, constantly exploring everything within reach. But for now, you are in the midst of the sweetest phase, and you don’t want to forget a single second. If you would like to know how to be prepared for your session, I’m here to help you out with these newborn photo session tips! As a Westchester newborn photographer, I love working with familes to give them photos they’ll treasure for years to come. Here are seven newborn photo session tips to get you ready!

The very first thing you need to know is when to book your newborn photo session. Scheduling your session anytime between week 2 and week 4 of baby’s due date is the best option. They’ll still be sleepy and calm while being past some of the discomforts of the first few days. In order to reserve your spot with your photographer, book your session at least three months before your due date so we can be ready!

I typically work within two rooms for lifestyle newborn pictures. Usually, parents choose to use the nursery as well as either the primary bedroom or the living room. Pick your locations ahead of time and make sure the spaces are tidy. Also, be sure that the shades and curtains are open so we can get all that great natural light!

The easiest way to keep your baby happy throughout your session is to keep them comfy. I would recommend setting your thermostat to around 75 degrees a few hours ahead of the session to ensure everything is nice and cozy once it’s time to start snapping!

Once your day arrives, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get yourself as well as any siblings ready and dressed. The newborn stage is unpredictable, and you want to have plenty of time to feel relaxed and confident. By budgeting in an extra hour or two, you’ll be prepared for everything!

With newborn sessions, I encourage you to keep it simple and neutral. Choose one outfit for you, your baby, and any other family members. That way, you can simplify the planning process and just focus on this sweet season! Baby will often also be photographed in a swaddling blanket to give a little bit of variety.

I always advise feeding your baby about 30 minutes before the session start time. There are a few reasons for this. First of all, this will ensure your baby is nice and full during pictures. Secondly, this should give them some time to digest, so you won’t have to worry about any spit-up throughout the session. It is also common to take breaks as needed during the session for additional feedings, diaper changes and soothing.

Lastly, be sure to focus on yourself ahead of your pictures! It is so easy to devote all of your free time to everyone except yourself. But this session is also a celebration of you! Drink lots of water, eat a good breakfast, and try to get as much rest as your baby will allow!

If you have been looking for the best way to get ready for your newborn session, I really hope these newborn photo session tips help you out! By following this advice, you can have pictures to celebrate this season!
